I thought I would throw out a few other tidbits just so folks have an idea of what has been going on here, although the main thing has been the holiday club.
In August, the Community Centre where we normally meet is closed – every summer, all month. No one is quite sure why it closes, although ostensibly it is for repairs and so the caretaker can go on holiday, but he goes on holiday at other times. Anyway, since the building is closed the church must find a different meeting place during the month of August. It so happens that the youth centre where I volunteer has some attractive meeting rooms up on the 1st floor (the actual 1st floor being called the ground floor), so we have been meeting there all month for our morning service. It's actually much nicer than the community centre, but I'm not sure it would work long term. But everyone seems to enjoy meeting there.
We have been hosting the evening service in our living room all month, which has been great fun. It got a little tight the night we had 14 adults, but we have really enjoyed doing it here. Meeting in our home seems to bring a warmth and openness out of some people that we just don't see when we meet at the community centre. People tend to talk more and stay longer. It has meant a little more work for us on Sunday afternoons, but at least we're already home, so it saves us the walk to and from church. You might say that we've moved to a “small group” format for Sunday night.:-) After August, I think we will start having the evening service in our home just on the last Sunday night of the month, but we'll see.
