I thought I should give a bit of report on the “Medieval Fayre,” since a number have asked about it. It was somewhat of a hectic day, but overall we all thought it went well. Our space was somewhat encroached upon by an ice cream truck, but it may have actually helped draw people in our direction.
The fair drew a fairly large crowd, and we saw a good many of the people that we know in town. Their responses were interesting – ranging from polite interest to completely ignoring us. We were positioned about 70 or 80 feet from the events area and the loud speakers, which meant that we had to compete at times with the frequently blaring rock music – very unmedieval, if nothing else.
But there were a number of highlights. First, we were able to meet dozens of kids from the town. In fact, yesterday four kids showed up at our door looking for a friend of theirs – they had the wrong apartment – and the first thing one of them said was, “Hey, I know you.” No one ever just accidentally comes to our door, hidden away as it is, so it seems that the Lord would have us meet some of those kids again.
Another encouraging thing was that we were able to distribute quite a few church invitations, which contain the gospel. Additionally, at least one person took some of our evangelistic literature and seemed quite in earnest about it. Her name was Cari-Anne (sp?). Marcia was also able to speak to a small group of girls and even gave them the gospel. At times, we were somewhat under-staffed, trying to run two different games as well as talk to people, so we were glad for the few good opportunities we did have to talk to folks.
So, all in all, it was a worthwhile effort. A side benefit was that I think it was encouraging to our church folks and helped to awaken some of them to the important responsibility we have to try to take the gospel to this community.
